At Complete Plumbing Heating and Air, we know water filtration systems so well that we work with Aqualistic to design an elite line of water filters and water softeners for homes and businesses. A good water filter provides a whole range of benefits for life. Even in high-income areas, there is plenty of reason to consider regarding your water quality. This is especially true in drought areas where water is reused, or pumped from other sources, such as the water basin that Orange County and Los Angeles sit in. Our water system contains dirt, minerals, chemicals, and impurities that can shift the taste and smell of water towards the bad. Not only that, but often times, the metals, chemicals, and potential pathogens can pose an invisible threat to your health.

Removing Pathogens

Filtered water is essential to keeping out harmful bacteria, viruses, and parasites from drinking water. For most of these concerns, chlorine is used to kill off most of the potential bacteria in our drinking water. But some diseases, such as the parasite Cryptosporidium, are resistant to chlorine and must be filtered out before the water can be safely consumed.

Lowering Chlorine Levels

As stated above, chlorine is often used to kill off bacteria and parasites for safer drinking water. This is because of its cheap price and has a high level of effectiveness. But chlorine causes unpleasant smells and an aftertaste that can react with other metals to form hazardous chemical compounds. We suggest using activated charcoal water filters to remove most, if not all, of the chlorine.

Mineral and Sediment Removal

A part of any water filter is to make sure that sediment such as dirt, silt, and clay are removed from the water. The filtration system can be made of a variety of materials. In general, the most effective are forms and hybrids of ceramic filters. Further, certain minerals like calcium and manganese are beneficial to remove to avoid staining of clothes, discoloration of porcelain, and reduce the lifespan of appliances such as washing machines. This is a particularly acute problem in Southern California, where many appliances such as washers have a greatly reduced lifespan. Long term, this can also cause gradual plumbing issues such as clogging or water pressure reduction.

Removing Dangerous Metals

Dangerous metals are relatively rare in water systems except lead. Lead is a heavy metal that can cause serious developmental issues in infants and children and is unfortunately still seeping into the water supply from old plumbing systems. Our own water filtration system is effective in removing the dangerous levels of lead and other heavy metals through carbon water filters. Other options for filtering lead include distillation and reverse osmosis. Regardless of whether you live on well water or municipal water, make sure to get your water quality checked.

Organic Pesticides

Pesticides are mostly handled in municipal water filtration processes, but modern organic pesticides can be tricky. Many of them are water soluble and can end up in water supplies. Research is ongoing regarding the extent and concern of these pesticides. However, if you are concerned—as many are—than carbon-filter-based systems, such as our own from Aqualistic, are top quality and provide excellent results.
